In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
