In a significant escalation, Kyiv's forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a major Russian oil refinery. This strike occurred on Thursday, as stated by the country's military authorities.

Attack Particulars and Military Significance

The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was said to be hit, with multiple blasts observed at the location. This represents not the first instance where Ukraine has deployed these powerful British-supplied missiles against objectives inside Russian territory.

Ukrainian officials noted that the Novoshakhtinsk plant serves as one of the primary providers of petrol products in Russia's south and is actively engaged in supplying the armed forces of the Russian Federation.

Political Discussions on the Conflict

In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive talks with representatives of ex-President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks focused on potential pathways to bring the conflict to a close.

“We had a very productive conversation: numerous specifics, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a social media platform. “There are some fresh concepts on how to bring a genuine peace closer, and it involves formats, meetings, and, certainly, the timeline.”

Legal Crackdown Inside the Country

In a parallel internal matter, a Russian court has convicted a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the opposition movement, was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.

This case are said to be based on an article Udaltsov published backing another group of Russian activists accused of forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has denied the allegations as fabricated and, after the sentencing, reportedly announced to begin a hunger strike in protest.

Foreign Prisoner Situation

Russian authorities indicated it is engaged with French authorities concerning the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher currently serving a three-year sentence in Russia and allegedly facing new charges of spying.

An official said that Russia has presented a proposal to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is monitoring the situation, with all government services mobilised to provide consular support and push for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.

Symbolic Reconstruction in Mariupol

A theatre in Mariupol, which was leveled in a devastating bombardment while many civilians sought refuge in its cellar, is scheduled to open its doors again. Authorities in control have heralded the rebuilding as a sign of renewal.

However, previous staff from the theatre have called the planned opening as “a macabre spectacle.” The reconstruction is part of a wider Moscow effort to present its rule in occupied Ukraine, a process that includes the arrest or exile of critics and confiscation of assets from local residents.

The theatre is due to reopen by the end of the month with a performance of a classic Russian story, having been rebuilt almost from scratch over the last 24 months.
