Three-time National Basketball Association MVP Nikola Jokic sustained a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee when the Nuggets lost by a score of 147-123 at the Heat.

The Serbian center sustained the injury towards the end of the second quarter following an accidental contact with teammate Spencer Jones.

Jones came down on the footwear of Jokic, and he instantly fell to the ground holding his leg.

The veteran player, who is leading the NBA season in rebounds and dimes, had a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the contest before suffering the setback.

The player will have an MRI on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury.

"Immediately, he understood he was hurt," commented Nuggets coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Any player that suffers an injury, it's gut-wrenching, especially somebody as important as him. More information will come tomorrow."

"We'll move on as a team. Obviously, right now, I am focused about Jokic personally and the disappointment of facing an event of that nature."
