The Showrunner Reveals He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions about Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Does Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
