Israeli citizens observe two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace talks proceed
Citizens have come together around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed official remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the plan.
A prominent representative familiar with the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.
The representative said the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the deal.
He commented that the discussions are "tough and have still not achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are making efforts to close the gaps between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict administration of the area
Citizen Feeling
In the city's public square previously, young a woman - whose sibling lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until all the hostages come back none of us will feel safe."
"After we see everybody home again, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people gathered to show their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester one woman stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."
Research now regularly indicate that around 70% of the population want the hostilities to finish in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Circumstances
At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.
From there, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, bombardments were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side district, area and zone areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"When the dusk comes, the fear arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.
"We are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, particularly my little child who rests his face on me all night."
"Every second we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had received the corpses of half dozen people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the south region of that area indicated another two victims had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south region, medics said.
