Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
