We are checking images and video posted earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the images were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
