Eurovision Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A new term emerged several months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts including child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for physicians to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their whole family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities rejects these claims, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is implicated in. Yet as traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what global togetherness looks like.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
