Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed outrage after the ex-president alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and stated they should be taken into custody and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Recording That Triggered the Debate
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in military or defense positions.
"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to safeguard and support this national charter," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our governing document are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can refuse improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you have to refuse illegal orders. No one has to follow commands that contravene the law or our founding principles."
The Former President's Incensed Response
The video message reportedly prompt a angry response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats released a unified announcement condemning the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no role in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all worked our country with exceptional patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these radical digital publications and recant his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also published a declaration.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this nation and made an pledge to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president views it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should know that we have their backs as they carry out their oath to the constitution and duty to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "Every American must come together and denounce the president's demands for our execution and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Political Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the execution of public representatives."
He continued: "This is an outright THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and absolutely."
The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This represents very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature telling soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's unprecedented in American history."
The Republican leader also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "defining the crime of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and determine all that."
Administration Reaction
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson answered: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the president is reacting to," the representative said. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to organize a digital communication to members of the US military, to serving soldiers encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She stated: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially encouraging."
